World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Tanzania in partnership with MJUMITA is implementing the five-year (2018-2022) programme named Leading the Change (LtC): Civil Society Rights and Environment. MJUMITA participated in LtC project with an objective to contributing to improving governance of the forest management within the participating villages. Through LtC project MJUMITA built the capacity of 22 CBFM villages and 10 CBOs to implement governance monitoring and community led advocacy actions. The actions contributed to continued protection of more than 240,000 ha of community forests, gazettement of 7 village land forest reserves (VLFRs) covering more than 68,000 hectors, creation of 4 new VLFR covering over 42,000 ha and issuance of 147 Certificates of customary rights of occupancy. It also contributed to national level advocacy which led to establishment of National Forest Policy Implementation Strategy and CBFM action plan, that express government’s commitment to expand the area under CBFM from the current 2.7 to 16 million hectors.
By virtue of this success, the WWF TCO have awarded MJUMITA a trophy of recogniton for their memorable partnership and successiful implementation of the project.
