From 2009 to 2014, MJUMITA implemented one of Tanzania’s first community REDD+ pilot projects in 27 villages across Kilosa, Lindi, and Mpwapwa. In partnership with TFCG and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the project demonstrated how forest carbon finance could deliver equitable community benefits. It supported land tenure security, developed village forest management plans, and distributed over $459,000 directly to households, with an additional $152,600 invested in community-chosen development projects. The project influenced national REDD+ policy and showcased how carbon payments can incentivize conservation, support livelihoods, and promote climate justice.
