Forests thrive when communities are in charge

Our Story

Mtandao wa Jamii wa Usimamizi wa Misitu Tanzania (MJUMITA) began as a grassroots movement in 2000 under the Msitu Yetu program led by the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group and CARE International. In response to growing community demand, we were formally registered in 2007, becoming the country’s only legally recognized community forest network.
Since then, we’ve grown into a vibrant national platform of community-based organizations representing hundreds of villages nationwide. We’ve helped establish Village Land Forest Reserves, pioneered Tanzania’s first REDD+ benefit-sharing model, and won the prestigious Equator Prize. Our advocacy has shaped national policies on forest governance, charcoal production, and land rights.

From legal empowerment to sustainable livelihoods, MJUMITA has consistently championed community conservation, so that forests are protected not through enforcement but through ownership and pride.

Our Approach

We believe that forests thrive when communities are in charge. Through Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM), we support villages in securing legal rights over their forests and managing them sustainably. Our model is built on good governance: transparent decision-making, inclusive leadership, and strong local institutions.
We also believe that conservation and development must go hand-in-hand. All MJUMITA members come from forest-adjacent villages and are committed to sustainable forest use practices. To join, CBOs must earn their income in ways that reduce pressure on forests.
Our Vision

Communities participate and benefit from inclusive and sustainable forest management.

Our Mission

To empower local communities in forest ownership and sustainable management through good governance, better policies, and improved livelihoods.

With over 132 community organizations in our network, we help ensure that the people who live closest to the forest are equipped to protect it, benefit from it, and advocate for its future.
