Our Story
Mtandao wa Jamii wa Usimamizi wa Misitu Tanzania (MJUMITA) began as a grassroots movement in 2000 under the Msitu Yetu program led by the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group and CARE International. In response to growing community demand, we were formally registered in 2007, becoming the country’s only legally recognized community forest network.
Since then, we’ve grown into a vibrant national platform of community-based organizations representing hundreds of villages nationwide. We’ve helped establish Village Land Forest Reserves, pioneered Tanzania’s first REDD+ benefit-sharing model, and won the prestigious Equator Prize. Our advocacy has shaped national policies on forest governance, charcoal production, and land rights.
From legal empowerment to sustainable livelihoods, MJUMITA has consistently championed community conservation, so that forests are protected not through enforcement but through ownership and pride.
